Coast Guard officer assigned to Bering Sea Patrol and Arctic Patrol including the revenue cutters, Bear and Northland. After retiring from the Coast Guard Zeusler served as an executive for the Alaska Steamship Co. and was active in civic organizations related to the Port of Seattle and the Pacific Northwest Maritime Historical Society. The Alaska Steamship Company, incorporated in 1894, shipped freight and passengers between Seattle and southeast Alaska, ca. 1901-1950. In 1953 the company expanded into container service, but due to increased fuel and insurance costs, strong competition from other types of container vessels such as barges and tugboats, and union demands, the Alaska Steamship Company ceased operations in 1971. Vilhjalmur Stefansson was born on November 3, 1879 in Arnes, Manitoba, Canada. He attended the University of North Dakota from 1897-1902. He was voted the best orator in 1900, and also worked for the school newspaper. In 1930 he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree, only the third such degree awarded.
